Florida Atlantic University was founded in 1964
in Boca Raton, on an 850-acre site located about three miles from
the Atlantic Ocean. The campus, halfway between Palm Beach and Fort
Lauderdale, enjoys a subtropical climate, with an average year-round
temperature of about 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
Since 1964, the Boca Raton campus has grown to
include more than 70 buildings with over two million square feet
of space devoted to classrooms, research laboratories, offices,
and other uses. The newest building, opened in the fall of 1998,
provides a major expansion for science classes and research. The
Dorothy F. Schmidt Center, a three-building complex opened in 1993,
includes outstanding space for visual arts programs and for theatre.
The College of Education occupied its new building in 1994, and
General Classroom South, one of the earliest campus buildings, was
revitalized by a total renovation in 1996. The campus is also home
to the five-story Wimberly Library, which houses one of the nation's
top Judaica collections in addition to its large collection of monographs,
serials, and other academic resources. Please click here to

Traffic is heaviest in the breezeway, which connects
the cafeteria and student service areas to academic buildings along
the central spine of the campus. The University Center houses many
student activities as well as a 2,400-seat auditorium which hosts
performances ranging from rock groups to the Florida Philharmonic
Orchestra. University residence halls provide living space for 1,500
students, and the physical education and recreation complex includes
a gymnasium and swimming pool as well as facilities for FAU's Division
I Owls. Planning for the inauguration of a football program is actively
proceeding, with the opening game anticipated in the fall of 2001.
